Island Life Diaries: Derrick Vermont

1. Where are you from?

I'm from the Caribbean island of Jamaica.

 2. Why did you move from the comfort of your homeland?

I moved to Cayman because I heard of a job opportunity over here, I thought why not give it a shot, Cayman isn't that far away from home for me, so I took the plunge and I'm glad I did.

 3. What made you choose Cayman?

Well, I like to say that I didn't choose Cayman, Cayman may have chosen me. I first experienced the island when I visited family here and I instantly fell in love. It's so close to Jamaica but it's like a whole other world.

4. What was the biggest challenge you faced when you arrived?

It was hard meeting people at first and integrating into the local community, I would say joining clubs and associations etc. like Rotaract and getting involved in what's going on in the community really helped the process. I now have friends for life.

5. What surprised you the most about Cayman?

It was really surprising to find people from all over the world in Cayman. You'll find people that have come from the Philippines, Russia and even the Czech Republic! It was surprising that with so many nationalities being represented we are all similar and share our appreciation for this gorgeous island.

6. In your opinion, what is the single most unique thing about the island?

I love the slow pace. You feel less stress and you're always on "island time". The weekends are amazing, the weather is almost always perfect and you feel like you're on vacation on the weekends!

 7. What do you love most about living in Cayman?

Definitely the pace and the people are awesome too.
