Island Life Diaries: Sabrina Stecyk

SO, WHERE ARE YOU ORIGINALLY FROM?

I grew up in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO GROW UP! AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN CAYMAN?

4 years

THAT’S COOL, SO WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO MOVE ON THIS TINY LITTLE ISLAND?

I needed a shake-up in my life; came to see my best friend with the intention of looking for employment and here I am 4 years later and loving it!

AMAZING! SO WHAT DO YOU DO HERE FOR WORK? ANY COOL HOBBIES?

I run the retail side of Premier Wines and Spirits. I am also a director with C.A.R.E. where I co-run their kids program. This is aimed at changing the perspective of how animals are viewed and treated here, all while focusing on our overall aim of tackling the pet overpopulation issue. I used to work at an animal shelter back in Canada and love being hands on with the animals as well so I foster and volunteer directly with the animals as much as I can!

CAN VISITORS GET INVOLVED WITH THE ANIMALS OR HUMANE SOCIETY TOO?

Even if someone was just here for the afternoon, the Humane Society very much welcomes anyone to stop by and spend time with the cats or walk the dogs. They often don't have volunteers during the week and desperately need the help to get the dogs out of their kennels to stretch their legs. If you are here for longer ask to take a dog to the beach for the day!

GREAT INFO! HOW ABOUT YOUR FAVOURITE DRINK AT THE END OF A WORK DAY?

I am not too picky to be honest! Give me a nice glass of wine, a local draft beer, a nice spirit. Just depends on my mood and where I am.

WE AGREE! AND WHERE WOULD YOU GO FOR THIS DRINK?

There are a lot of great places on this Island to sit and have a drink. I love Premier Tap Room for their selection of beers, wines and unique spirits but am happy to go sit by the water at Sunset House or Le Vele. Head to 19-81 Brewery to check out their feature craft beer or a hotel along seven mile if I am feeling fancy.

WHAT ABOUT FOOD? WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE DISH?

I am vegetarian and luckily there are a lot of options! I would say Bread and Chocolate is one of my favourites, their pulled jackfruit sliders are unreal.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO JUST MOVED TO THE ISLAND?

I would say to get out and get to know some people, everyone here is very friendly and loves giving their take on best things to do on island. Best place is grabbing a seat at a bar and chatting to your bartender, you'll meet people from all over the world and are sure to come across someone with the same hobbies as you.
